Beryl up and running… finally

Ok.. it took me a couple of days to get this thing up and running. It had mi cussing like mad Monday night. The upgrade to Edgy like I’ve stated before wasnt that bad.. no major problems there BUT decided I needed to install Beryl.

Beryl is a fork of compiz, and a collection of other tools to go along with it.
CSM has become Beryl Settings Manager (beryl-settings)
CGWD has become Emerald, with its companion emerald-theme-manager.

I can not tell a lie though i like this ravishing looking combiniation of window manager and compositing manager. It really brings ur desktop to life…. Yea it may not really be too productive BUT hey ur shit looks nice and u don’t need a newPC with the latest hardware to run it. BUT you do need patience… ohh yes u need patience.

One of the things that was messing me up with my xorg installation was the kernel I was using and the new nvidia drivers…. dem nuk like one another. To be honest i don’t know exactly WHAT was the issue i just know that when my system booted up and GDM is supposed to start I just see a blank black screen.. a blank screen with no mouse pointers. Since I only saw that screen i was here thinking that the system hung or something….. NOPE I was able to ssh into the box from my other machines and twiddle with a few thigns there.

After hanging around the #ubuntu-xgl channel on irc.freenode.net and getthing some help from Amaranth, lupine_85 and totalnewb I was able to get everything up and running. I started emerald-theme-manager and picked a theme and checked some other settings. I then went and selected -Reload Window Manager…. I was greated with a splash screen that looked something like this when it was started but waving like flag a in the wind. I’ll post some pics later on when i reach home. I need to fiddle around with some of the settings some more.. but i must say i like what i see.

Taking a ride on the Wild Side!!!!

Ok.. not sure what came over me but I decided to give Edgy a try. Why not?? I was using Dapper about 2 months before it was final. Well I changed sources.list file did a sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade the whole proccess had me download 444mb in 1h9m53s (106kB/s) (yea i have a measly 1mb )  I came across a few snags like  i had to remove firefox because i was getting some error message during the installation of the downloaded packages.

As I write this i think my main reason to really try  Edgy was/is because of Beryl….. yes beryl. Beryl is the for of compiz that is driving the *nix world mad right now. Alot of ppl are willing to give linux try because it can look so pretty.

Well I’m not quite finish as et.. but of course you guys will kow when i am :D.. lata

Ahhh VMware… I’ve missed u

I’m now running VMware Workstation .v5.5.2. It’s fairly easy u just need to make sure that you have some pre-requisites first.

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`

then ran the install script

./vmware-install.pl

answered the default questions then BAM!!!!… have my vmware server… Can anyone guess where Windows shall be going?!??!?!?!

No Compiz

After all the shit I went through to get my machine back up an runnign itilll fall into snags. grrrr…

I’m installing xgl/compiz so i do….. sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl compiz-gnome cgwd cgwd-themes csm I end up with:

Package cgwd is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package cgwd has no installation cadidate

for cgwd cgwd-themes and also csm . I’m here scouring the net to find out what is wrong, bad repos, typo, etc. Trust me i’ve been looking for a good 2 hours now…. nada!!!!! I even got the deb files and tried to install those…. nada once again.
In the back of my head i was thinking about beryl and it’s upcoming release date?!?! That maybe since beryl’s release will be soon they are doing something to the repos…. SO SAID SO DONE!!! I headed over to them irc channel #ubuntu-xgl on irc.freenode.net and DBO answered my question here is a snippet of the convo:

Sooo after a few hours of searching what did a accomplish????? A flippin headache!!!!!!!

Failing flashplugin

I’m just puttign this here so I can rember it JUST in case i happen to change up things again. While I was trying to install the flashplugin i came upon this:

basically all u do is change the line 35 of /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.postinst

from

/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.postinst

to

update-rc.d flashplugin-nonfree defaults >/dev/null

then away u go… Ofcourse i would have never of known this if it wasn’t for this post in the ubuntuforums
