Zap2IT discontinuing their “labs”

Posted in Computers & Internet, Linux on Friday, June 22, 2007 by Yatta

WHY!??!?!?!?!? There was a letter posted on the xmltv-users mailing list about the end of Zap2IT. Here is a little excerpt:

On 6/19 Tribune Media announced that they will be discontinuing theirZap2IT Labs service on September 1, 2007…….

This doesn’t only effect XMLTV, it effects MythTV, GBPVR, and many more applications that use U.S./Canada listings. I’m confident the Open Source Community will work out a solution, there is no need to panic.

This sucks I’ve been liking my PVR, at least when I happen to use it 😀 A PVR without a decent channel guide is basically a dumb vcr :-(( I hope something is sorted out before Heroes or 24 start back next season.

Headlight gleaming!!!!

OK… bartergeek pointed me to this DIY: Polishing Plastic Headlights. Looking at my yellow headlights every morning was slowly getting me… why u ask? Mainly because it was slowly becoming one of those things that i would have to add to my To-Buy list. I really wasn’t feeling that too well. So coming upon this gem.. I decided to do it. Only snag I really came across was finding 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, a regular hardware had everything else in stock but that. I ended up going to car care spot to get it. I only did one headlight…. this DIY takes too much work…. but I must agree I see the difference. (Leave your mouse over the pictures an wait for them to load… I think it looks better that way)

You may think it’s the way the light shines on the headslights but there is a big difference. I think if i REALLY put some serious elbow grease into it I would get it clearer. Tose pics are of left and right hand side of my car…. I did the passenger side (too tired to and was getting to dark to complete) and left the driver side. Maybe weekend I’ll finish them both up…. You can see the difference right?

What has been going on……..

As you can obviously tell I haven’t really been around to much… I’ve been online, just not blogging. Streaks, the mongrel looking one behind Midnight, was put to sleep last week Tuesday. She never really got any shots so it seems like she picked up some virus that left her with loose bowels and foaming at the mouth every now an then. Don’t get me wrong I took her the vet an everything but when they told me they would have to admit her and that it would be JA $6,000 (US 1$ = JA $67) deposit I asked if there was anything else that could be done. They said well you can put her to sleep…. there I was with a small situation:

1. Admit her to the vetinary clinic for waaaay to much money not knowing for sure she will be okay

2. Save the money and use it for slightly more important stuff. (not saying she wasn’t important but not approximately $10,0000worth

I took the cheaper road…. sorry for you animal lovers … I paid the JA $1,000and put her to sleep. So Midnight is here by himself acting liek he was always the only dog. I must admit I kind of feel it for him… him nuh have nuh bitch inna di yaad again.

Old ChairMy desk chair of over 10 years has decided to slowly breakdown 😦 Whoooaa is me. Look how close to the ground I am now, decent chairs are EXPENSIVE!!!! What’s a brother to do?!?! Buy a new flippin’ chair.

Moving on to BabyFace IV, aka VW Bora 2002, don’t worry or start to fret it’s okay….. somewhat. I just happen to be driving around with a busted master brake cylinder 😦 which means I’m driving up and down my hill with no DECENT brakes. Right about now I’m thinking about parking it until I get the brake cylinder really can’t afford to hit anyone or crash.

Backup gone wrong….

I’m not sure about some of you guys out there… but every so often I reinstall my windows PC, just to try an keep it running smoothly. If you ask my you can reg clean and do all sort’s of madness to TRY an keep it in tip top shape but…. you end up falling short. So about every 5-8months I wipe my windows machine to get it ready for a fresh start. That time has come. I don’t have any windows machine per say that I use at home too much, the three I have running are all *nix boxes with one being able to dual boot to WinXP. The machine I planned on re-doing was my work laptop it just moving sluggish… and freezing every now an then for some unknown reason. So what better thing to do an wipe it an start from a fresh slate.

The drama started when a fren gave me a hard drive to check for him… after a rain/lightning storm it’s been acting up. Well i plugged it in machines said it needed a format…. so just like any normal tech… I formated it. My overly hyped tech ego stopped right there… since i was able to read/ write to it I figured everything was okay. I Popped in Digiwiz Minipe shared the drive and copied away……..

I noticed I copied and MOVED some files.. THAT was the wrong thign to do with a drive that is questionable :-(. You guessed it… I got an error msg while copying some stuff stating that the resource was unavailable. I just restarted the machine… low an behold machine is telling me that the hard drive needs to be formatted. I just kissed mi teeth and turned it off. About 30minutes later i decided to work on a document for work…. I never saw the directory??? Something told me to look at some other files work related GONE!!! At this time I was like SHIT! So I brought up back the other machine to search that drive and see if the directories are there…. nothing shit still telling me that it needs to format. Now I REALLY could not afford for those files to be missing/deleted. So i fetched my little must have techie CD’s Hiren’s BootCD, UBCD and Techie’z Toolkit ver2 (ver3 is out but I don’t have it yet)

Most of these apps on these CS’d brought up the information on the drive, unlike windows or Bartpe/MiniPE, but something was still wrong. Some of them never dealt to well with long filenames 😦 , I could not bear that (yea I’m lazy like that) There were 2 programs that came to the rescue, File Wizard 1.35 and Restoration 2.5.14.

File Wizard was able to read the Long filenames PLUS read the SATA drive in the same machine. It was either the various programs couldn’t deal with the LFN or never read the SATA drive that was in the machine.

Restoration was able to retrieve some files that were deleted from my system in perfect condition.

As of yesterday afternoon my system is back to normal, sort of, I’m missing some ‘personal’ files but I can easily get those back.

I never used a Linux RescueCD  which I should have tried but I still don’t fully trust the kernel with NTFS file systems, so i stuck with the evil I knew.

I think I shall start backup some of these files the SAN at the office. 😀
