Hardy is it worth it?

Posted in Computers & Internet, Linux on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 by Yatta

I’ve upgraded my desktop to Ubuntu Hardy Heron the day it was released no big issues there. So last week I decided to upgrade my Dell D820 work laptop to Hardy… fllllaaawwweeddd plan!! If it’s not the annoying system beep it’s program freezing for now apparent reason. Your special function keys just stop working (you have ANY idea how hard it is to work on some machines without your special keys for eg. caps).

This keyboard thing though seems to be contributed to having VMware installed on your computer. The CTRL, ALT, Shift, etc. keys will stop working on the host machine but will continue to work in the VM machine. After doing some searching I found out that if you run:
setxkbmap
You get your stuff back after you type that in. Granted at times you may have to type it in a few times but that is better than rebooting your damn machine.

Mythbuntu…

Posted in Computers & Internet, Linux on Saturday, April 5, 2008 by Yatta

I’ve been using MythTV for a little time now…. I like it. Once you watch TV with a PVR things are never the same. I decided to try out Mythbuntu, not for any apparent reason I just want to see what mythbuntu has to offer.

It took me sometime to install… if it wasn’t one thing it was another :-(. One time I just got a bunch of:

Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block...
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block...
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block...

So the mythbuntu CD took FOREVER to load, and yes the CD was good.. I check the MD5SUM and that was good. After that never worked I ended up trying Xubuntu (since mythbuntu uses XFCE4) still no installl, this time different error message though. At one point I was also getting stuck during install :-(. The install would hang at ‘Configuring apt‘… ‘Scanning the mirror‘ step. It just stops at 40%. Trust me this was getting frustrating… I found out the reason for this though.. after like 2hrs of trying various stuff.

It seems like there was something wrong with

It seems like there was something wrong with us.archive.ubuntu.com after going into busybox and trying to kill all the wget and sh command that were doing some apt command it ALMOST went back to normal install mode. Like I said though ALMOST.

At the end of the day I just plugged out my rj45 started up the install again and it was smooth sailing.

Emoze up close

emoze.logo.jpgSorry for the long delay in writing this, but as you can see I haven’t been blogging that much to begin with. I have grown to like this little app, I like it even more since it is FREE!!! If you have a work account account which is based on Exchange and has web access (OWA ) this is sweet application. There are 2 connection types when you install this app: PC Connector or Global Gateway.

Ain’t this a BITCH!!!!

We’ve been having a quite a few rain showers with a WHOLE lot of lightning. About a year ago there was some heavy lightning that costed me a few headaches. I figured I learned my lesson from that time and started taking some precautions, I bought a decent UPS not just a powerstrip. This damn thing ran me about $5,000 JA!!!! Up to this point it has served me well… when JPS decides to act up I’m still up an running and that is with a 19 inch CRT monitor. I’ve never, at least don’t remember ever really testing the UPS but i do know it ran for a good 15mins one time.

Just like any other day I leave my stuff plugged in and go about my usual business. I’m at work I see rain a fall like mad… with lightning right behind it. Later on in the day I got a call from my father asking why the net is down I told him probably the UPS hasn’t turned back on (day before my mother had to go in my room an turn on the UPS). I reach home i see most of the lights that are supposed to be on the various devices on except……. my 4-port SpeedTouch Modem. Long story short, adapter for the modem fine.. modem not. Nooooo it had to go beyond that. I turn on my pc BlAcKtOwEr everythign seems fine boots up fine…. i go to login no key’s on the keyboard working. I figure is just the KVM acting up so i fiddle around with the plugs restart PC same thing. I found out that night that PC got hosed also… PS/2 ports gone… LAN port gone…. one of the USB ports gone!!!! We all know how useful a *nix machine is without a NIC :-(. Good thing is though is that the 2 front USB ports work fine I just have to use a USB keyboard/mouse. After plugging in a extra NIC i had for in my pfSense machine BlAcKtOwEr is up an running albeit slightly crippled.
I’m kewl since my machines are back in working order…. somewhat. After turning on everything an taking a final assement of what is what here is what I found:

1. Motherboard bad
2. KVM bad (not sure bout the cables)
3. PS/2 Keyboard bad
4. Slimbay GONE (not sure on the 2.5 HD in it as yet, have to get back my enclosure) This little bugger has served me well!!! it shall be greatly missed.

I’m thinking the surge came in via the phone line; that was the only thing was not protected. In coming in that way it went rhough the LAN ports of the modem to my various PC’s. I’ve tried putting my phone line through the UPS but when i do that I lose line sync, yes i have DSL… Flow hasn’t reached my area as yet :-(. I’m not sure what I’m going to do so I don’t have a repeat of this in the current rain season or even next year. I really don’t want to make this a tradition.

QNext

Posted in Computers & Internet on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 by Yatta

QNextI just came across Qnext which is another IM client. At first glance it reminds me of Pownce, but as I look around I notice a few differences.

Qnext MyPC – Like a remote control for ur PC (perfect for those frens who just don’t understand how to follow certain instructions) Just take over the PC and show them EXACTLY what to do.

Qnext File Transferring – ” move any type of file of any size to anyone… … Qnext takes the direct route and sends your files directly from you to your recipient, so you can send 100 MB or even Gigabytes worth of files” Pownce gives you a certain file size limit

Of course you can import all your contacts from Yahoo, MSN, AIM, and ICQ.. i heard GTalk shuold be implemented in the next release.

Looking over the site it does seem like I shall give this thing a try. Try it out an tell me what u guys think. In a couple of days I’ll write a small review…

Another quick note… it works on Windows, *nix and Mac.

Zap2IT discontinuing their “labs”

Posted in Computers & Internet, Linux on Friday, June 22, 2007 by Yatta

WHY!??!?!?!?!? There was a letter posted on the xmltv-users mailing list about the end of Zap2IT. Here is a little excerpt:

On 6/19 Tribune Media announced that they will be discontinuing theirZap2IT Labs service on September 1, 2007…….

This doesn’t only effect XMLTV, it effects MythTV, GBPVR, and many more applications that use U.S./Canada listings. I’m confident the Open Source Community will work out a solution, there is no need to panic.

This sucks I’ve been liking my PVR, at least when I happen to use it 😀 A PVR without a decent channel guide is basically a dumb vcr :-(( I hope something is sorted out before Heroes or 24 start back next season.

What has been going on……..

As you can obviously tell I haven’t really been around to much… I’ve been online, just not blogging. Streaks, the mongrel looking one behind Midnight, was put to sleep last week Tuesday. She never really got any shots so it seems like she picked up some virus that left her with loose bowels and foaming at the mouth every now an then. Don’t get me wrong I took her the vet an everything but when they told me they would have to admit her and that it would be JA $6,000 (US 1$ = JA $67) deposit I asked if there was anything else that could be done. They said well you can put her to sleep…. there I was with a small situation:

1. Admit her to the vetinary clinic for waaaay to much money not knowing for sure she will be okay

2. Save the money and use it for slightly more important stuff. (not saying she wasn’t important but not approximately $10,0000worth

I took the cheaper road…. sorry for you animal lovers … I paid the JA $1,000and put her to sleep. So Midnight is here by himself acting liek he was always the only dog. I must admit I kind of feel it for him… him nuh have nuh bitch inna di yaad again.

Old ChairMy desk chair of over 10 years has decided to slowly breakdown 😦 Whoooaa is me. Look how close to the ground I am now, decent chairs are EXPENSIVE!!!! What’s a brother to do?!?! Buy a new flippin’ chair.

Moving on to BabyFace IV, aka VW Bora 2002, don’t worry or start to fret it’s okay….. somewhat. I just happen to be driving around with a busted master brake cylinder 😦 which means I’m driving up and down my hill with no DECENT brakes. Right about now I’m thinking about parking it until I get the brake cylinder really can’t afford to hit anyone or crash.
